Amir Sabra combines breakdance, dabkeh (Levantine traditional dance), images of dancers filmed in the street and songs in an eruptive nomadic performance. Improvising as he goes, he mashes up different worlds and landscapes, moves from the private to the collective, from the particular to the universal, and shares his inner enchantments through a familiar gesture, an inclination of the face, a dance movement. It’s as if he’s inviting us to enter his circle and blend into it… Born in the West Bank, he co-founded the Palestinian dance collective Stereo48 and now lives in Dublin, working regularly with Les Ballets C de la B, Pokemon Crew and Catherine Young Dance. When he created Within this Party in 2022, he was thinking about children doing hip-hop on the ruins of their houses; he was thinking about wholesale destruction and chaos…and dreaming of another world that would keep us alive: “a harmonious, coherent, rhythmic world” where we’ll be standing—and dancing.
